Rockin’ Reader is a national literacy initiative developed by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Now in its second year, Cracker Barrel has established partnerships with elementary schools in 29 states to establish a comfortable reading space in each school for volunteers to read with school children. Burgess Elementary School is one of eleven schools in South Carolina and the only school in Horry County to be selected for a partnership. Cracker Barrel has provided us with two double rocking chairs, a barrel bookshelf, and a collection of children’s books. Now all we need is you! Do you have a few hours to donate during the school year to read with a child? Information will be coming home soon providing addition information and asking for volunteers. Our goal is 500 hours for the school year– please help us by reading with a child!

William Burgess Award Winner
Congratulations to Karsten Kenley, who was awarded the very first William Burgess Award at the Fifth Grade Award Ceremony on June 3rd. This prestigious honor is given to a student who shows outstanding leadership skills in and out of the classroom, exemplifies lifeskills in daily choices, is a positive role model for peers, is actively involved in service activities, takes initiative to go above and beyond and has positive interactions with students and adults. This is the highest honor awarded to a student at Burgess Elementary School.
The award is named after William Burgess, for whom our community is named. Mr. Burgess was a highly loved and respected man and was known as a person of integrity, honor, and compassion. He was commissioned U.S. Postmaster of Marlow, S.C. in 1887 and commissioned U.S. Postmaster of Burgess, SC in 1906.
